3D Analyses
Using a LIDAR point cloud, I generated a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of Portland, Oregon. The model shows the relative flatness of the eastside while the westside of Portland contains a hilly terrain. The location of Portland Fire Stations was included in the analysis.
This analysis illustrates the sound range of concert venues in Charlotte, North Carolina. Two concert venues were included in the analysis, along with 7 surrounding buildings. I used a DSM to extrude 3D buildings.
This analysis highlights the impact of buildings on solar radiation in downtown Portland, Oregon. Using a LIDAR point cloud, I generated a Digital Surface Model (DSM) to run a Solar Radiation analysis. In order to display the buildings in 3D, I categorized the LIDAR points as building or ground. I converted the 3D analysis to a 2D raster so I could cleanup the building footprints, then I reconverted the analysis back to 3D. This process resulted in an output that contains realistic looking 3D buildings.
Above is the 2D version of the Solar Radiation analysis. From a birds eye view, the viewer is able to see low solar radiation surrounding the tallest buildings in downtown Portland. Tall buildings (>100 feet) cast large shadows which prevents solar radiation from reaching the surface.
